Sunshine and Roses

In the past month or so J and I have been back and forth to Seoul to an amazing doctor.

First he intrigued us, then he scared us and today, he gave us good news:  it is possible for us to have a baby.  Yes!

We are able to have a baby via IVF.  That's good news!  We were concerned the information would tell us we were unable to have a biological child and now we know we are able to!

We are all set to begin another round of IVF this time in Seoul at Rachel Fertility Hospital.  We have not made an appointment yet, but our doctor gave us a letter concerning our situation to give to them and we will see what we see.

So...what's going on and what's all the drama?

We have been told J has low testosterone and osteopernia/osteoporosis in addition to low quality and low quantity of specimens.  Sounds awesome, huh?  This combines to be less than 5 million specimen.  Out of those less than 5 million, less than 10% are viable.  IVF is our only option so we needed a better doctor who specializes in this special type of situation.

He needs to be healthy first and foremost so we are doing that and baby thoughts are on the back burner.  The doctor did a chromosome check as well to be certain there were no other factors.  This basically determines if we are able to have a biological child together.  If a situation is similar to ours, this is normally done but normally, men are not willing to do this (in Korea) for fear of their wives leaving them and losing face with other men.  Not the case with us.

Today we were super, super happy to discover there are no chromosome defects and that we are able to have a biological child which is what we want.  We looked into ALL other options during the past few weeks and they just aren't possible for various reasons.

Any meds? Not yet.  Exercise and vitamins are on the menu so far as bone density is concerned.  Each year he will have his testosterone and bone density levels checked and we will go from there. Basically, it won't get better, it will continue to get worse but by taking these steps we can hope to help things level off until his mid 40's or so.

What about his testosterone levels?  They are super low and about the same level as a 71 year old man.  No meds yet because any medicine now would basically make him sterile as far as that is concerned.  The doctor hasn't said yet, but the most likely next step will probably be to prescribe Clomid for him for 3 months and when the end of the 3 months arrives complete and egg harvest and embryo transfer (5 day with chromosomal checks--no playing around this time) and see what we see.  After that is taken care of perhaps more meds in that area will be taken into consideration.  Then again, we aren't sure but that is the most likely and most plausible scenario so far.

What next?  We set up an appointment at Rachel and discuss our options for baby stuff and guess what?  I'll be put to sleep for egg harvesting...YES!  You know that was one of the first things I checked on.

We do not want to put too much specific medical information on here so if you have specific medical questions please message and we will get back with you.

  2. Hi Aunt Mary!
It is 1 hour to Seoul by KTX (fast train) and 2 hours by slow train. If you take the bus it is about 1.5 hours depending on what stop you get off at.
    Love you,
    E and J
